This member of the Dioscoreaceae
family was given this name by
Henry Hurd Rusby
in 1907. It is found
in Bolivia, Brazil and Peru growing in a rich but well drained soil with
some to lots of water and some sun. The caudex can grow to
30
centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to six metres in
height. The
flowers are greenish white.
Dioscorea is named after
Pedianos Dioscorides, a Greek physician if the 1st century A.D. The
species name means 'grey-blue, sea-blue, or lavender'. |
