This member of the Agavaceae* family was given this name by George Engelmann in 1902. It is found in north-eastern Mexico and Texas in sounthern USA, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 32 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to five metres in height. The flowers are white.

The genera name is from Yuca, the name in St. Domingo for a totally different plant. The species name means 'with a beak'.
