This member of the
Aizoaceae family
was given this name by Nicholas Edward Brown in 1931. It is found in
south-western South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with not that
much water but lots of sun. The caudex can grow to
three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from three
to five centimetres in height. The flowers are yellowish white to bright yellow.
The species name is
only used for this genera. I fail to figure how Brown came up with it.
Latin pre- 'before' and 'seedpods'?
The species is named after Sir William Newenham Montague Orpen,
1878-1931, a British painter.
It is a winter
grower in the wild. |
