This member of the
Oxalidaceae
family
was given this name by Giovanni Ignazio Molina in 1782. It is found in
north-western Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru - and grown as a crop in most of South
America, growing in a rich soil with some to lots of water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to
three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
to 50 centimetres in height. The flowers are yellow.
The genera name means 'sharp,
pungent', as to leaf taste. The species name refers to its tuberous
roots.
