This member of the Oxalidaceae family was given this name by Karl Sigismund Kunth in 1822. It is found in most of South America, and cultivated in most of the rest tempered world. It is growing in a well drained rich soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to 2,5 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to fifteen centimetres in height. The flowers are pink.

The genera name means 'sharp, pungent', as to leaf taste. The species name means 'weak, frail, small' for its appearance.
