This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Deidré Anne Snijman in 1981. It is found in Southern South Africa, growing in clay to a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The bulb can grow to six centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 15 centimetres in height, 20 with the flower. The flowers are bright red.

Haemanthus means blood flower; Greek haima for 'blood' and anthos meaning 'flower'. The species name crispus referring to the wavy leaf margins.

This is a winter-grower.
