This
dioecious member of the
Cucurbitaceae family
was given this name by Tomitarô Makino in 1902. It is found in Bangladesh,
Bhutan, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal,
New Guinea, Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam, growing in a drained
but rich soil with quite some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to
three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
to eight metres in height. The flowers are pale green over pale yellow to white..
The genera
name means 'naked stem'.
The species name from its five-lobed
leaf.
