This member of the Euphorbiaceae family was given this name by Nicholas Edward Brown in 1915. It is found in the Great Karas Mountains in south-eastern Namibia, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to eight centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to ten centimetres in height. The flowers are green and white.

The genera is named after Euphorbos, the Greek physician of King Juba II of Numidia. The species is named from Latin baliola; 'dark chestnut-brown' in reference to the colour of the glands.
