This member of the
Asclepiadaceae*
family
was given this name by Joseph Decaisne in 1844. It is found in China, Mongolia
and both Koreas, growing in anything from clay to rich soil with some water and
some sun. The caudex can grow to six centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
to four metres in height. The flowers are white to yellowish-green.
The genera name comes
from Greek kynos; meaning 'dog' and anchein; 'to
choke'. The species name after the Russian botanist Alexander von
Bunge / Алекса́ндр Андре́евич Бу́нге, 1803-1890, who worked in Asia.
*)Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Asclepiadaceae is now part of the Apocynaceae.
