It is found in north-eastern South Africa, southern Eswatini and southern Mozambique, growing in a sandy soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to fifteen centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from one to two centimetres in height. The flowers are greenish-yellow to greenish-white.

The genera is named after Pierre Cusson, 1727-1783, a French physician, botanist and mathematician. The species name is combined of theLatin words areni; 'sand' and cola; 'inhabitant', and that is exactly what it do.
