This monoecious member of the
Cucurbitaceae family was given this name by Bentham and the
young Hooker in 1867. It is found
in southern Africa, growing in a well drained soil with
some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to 20
centimetres in diameter, the vines can reach two metres in length. The
flowers are pale yellow.
The genera name from Latin;
corallum; 'coral' and Greek; karpos; 'fruit' for the red
fruits. The species name after Friedrich Martin Josef Welwitsch,
1806-1872, an Austrian explorer and botanist. |
