This
member of the Agavaceae*
family
was given this name by Stephan Friedrich Ladislaus Endlicher in 1833. It is found
on both major islands of New Zealand. It is growing in a well drained soil with some organic
matter, and with some to quite a lot water and some to lots of sun. The stem can grow to
100 or even 200 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
to twenty centimetres in height. The flowers are white to cream coloured.
The dark red form; Purpurea is quite
common in cultivation.
It is a bit skinny, especially the
first 50-100 years, but here it is anyway.
The genera name; Cordyline is from
the Greek kordyle, meaning 'club' a reference to the enlarged
underground stems or rhizomes. The species name from Latin: Southern.

system; APG IV 2016,
Agavaceae now part of the Asparagaceae. |
