This member of the Blechnaceae family was given this name by Johann Wilhelm Sturm in 1858. It is found on the three Juan Fernández islands in Chile, growing in peat and volcanic gravel with lots of water and lots of sun. The stem can grow to 30 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 200 centimetres in height. The spores are brown.

The genera name comes from the Greek word βλῆχνον, which means 'for a fern'. The species name means 'same leaves as Cycads'
