This recent discovered member of the Loasaceae family was described by James Lauritz Reveal in 2002. It is found in western Colorado, U.S.A., growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The rhizomes will grow up to three centimetres in diameter, the branches reach for up to 30 centimetres in length. The flowers are gold to yellow in colour, and open in late afternoon.

The genera name for Christian Mentzel, a German physician and botanist. The species name means 'having a rhizome'.
