This member of the
Zamiaceae family
was given this name by Robert Allen Dyer and Verdoorn in 1969. It is
only known from a single colony of 17? on the Zembe Mountain in
Mozambique and some say one location in Zimbabwe, growing in a well drained soil with
quite some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to
30 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
to 100 centimetres in height. The cones are green.
The name
Encephalartos is derived from the Greek.
en meaning 'within', kephali meaning 'head' and artos meaning
'bread'. The specific is
named after Raymond Munch, 1901 - 1985, a Zimbabwean farmer and plant
collector with a particular interest in aloes and cycads, who collected
the plant. |
