This member of the Nolinaceae family was given this name by Charles Lemaire in 1861. It is found in the south-western Mexico, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The stem can grow up to three and a half meter in diameter and reach five meters in height. The flowers are from crème coloured to maroon.

The genera name after Monsieur Beaucarne, a Belgian succulent plant grower who first collected flowers of the genera. The species name means 'tight, close, strait, drawn together'.

*)Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Nolinaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.

I did see a lot of wild plants in Mexico, but this one is from a botanical garden!
