This
dioecious member of the
Menispermaceae
family
was given this name by J.D. Hooker and T. Thomson in 1885. It is found in
Assam, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Java, Laos, Lesser Sunda Islands, Malaya, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka and
Vietnam, growing in a well drained rich soil with
some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to five centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
to fifteen metres in height. The flowers are greenish-yellow to yellow.
The genera from Latin tīna;
'wine-vessel' and Greek σπορά; sporá; 'sowing'
for the fruits. The species name means 'curled closely, crested' for
the vines. |
