This member of the
Hyacinthaceae* family
was given this name by Mario Martínez-Azorín and Manuel Benito Crespo, in
2013. It is found in south-western South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with
some water and lots of sun. The bulb can grow to
six centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
to 15 centimetres in height, up to 35 with the inflorescence. The flowers are
pale greenish white with an outer white line.
The genera name from Greek:
ornithos; 'bird' and gala; 'milk'. The species name is named after the
location of the first collection; Tanqua Karoo.
*)Accordantly
to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae
is now part of the Asparagaceae.
This is a winter
