This member of the
Hyacinthaceae* family
was given this name by
John C. Manning and Peter Goldblatt in 2004, however, the basionym: Albuca setosa
is still widely used. It is found in south-western South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with
some water and lots of sun. The bulb can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
from 15 to 50 centimetres in height. The flowers are from white to
yellow with green stripes.
The
genera name from Greek: ornithos; 'bird' and gala;
'milk'. The species name setosum is derived from Latin seta
meaning 'bristle' (or hairy), this refers to the top of the bulb.
