This member of the Berberidaceae family was given this name by Armen Leonovich Takhtajan in 1970. It is found in Afghanistan, Russia and Turkmenistan, growing in a well drained but rich soil with quite some water and lots of sun. The corm can grow to three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 25 centimetres in height. The flowers are yellow.

The genera name from the Greek gymnos; 'naked' and Latin sperma; 'seed', referring to the unripe seeds which are exposed when the membranous pericarp splits
The species name for the Darwas Region in Afghanistan, where it was first found.

As I faild to find photos of the corms, here are two drawings.
