This member of the Euphorbiaceae family was given this name by Alain Campbell White, Robert Allen Dyer and Boyd Lincoln Sloane in 1941. It is found in the quarts fields between Ladismith and Barrydale in south-eastern South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 16 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 25 centimetres in height - and additional the raised caudex. The flowers are yellow.

The genera is named after Euphorbos, the Greek physician of King Juba II of Numidia. The species is named from Latin;  fortuita; 'accidental', as it was discovered by chance.
