This member of the Dioscoreaceae
family was given this name by
David Prain and Isaac Henry Burkill
in 1916. It is found
in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras
and Mexico, growing in a well drained
but rich soil with
quite some water and little to some sun. The caudex can grow to
20
centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to five metres in
height. The
flowers are greenish yellow.
Dioscorea is named after
Pedianos Dioscorides, a Greek physician if the 1st century A.D. The
species name after Karl Gustav Bernoulli, 1834-1878, a Swiss
physician and naturalist who explored Guatemala. |
