This
dioecious member of the Dracaenaceae* family
was given this name by Charles Lemaire in 1856. It is found in north-eastern
Mexico, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots
of sun. The caudex can grow to 30 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
to 180 or even 450 centimetres in height. The flowers are from white over cream
to brownish yellow.
The genera name
comes from the Greek words dasys, meaning 'dense' , 'rough' or
'shaggy', and lirion meaning 'lily' in reference to the rough
leaves of some species. The specific name means 'the longest' in
reference to the extremely long leaves of this species.
