This member of the Burseraceae family was given this name by Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler in 1880. It is found in central and south-western Mexico, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The stem can grow to 25 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to six metres in height. The flowers are deep magenta with white edges.

The genera is named after: Joachim Burser, German/Danish botanist,1583-1639. The species name for the two coloured flowers.
