This member of the
Hyacinthaceae* family was given this name by Carl Ludwig von Willdenow
in 1829. It is found on the Canaries Islands, Morocco and Western Sahara, growing in a well drained soil like sand or grit with some
water and some to lots of sun. The bulb can grow to eight centimetres in
diameter, the entire plant to 35 or even 50 centimetres in height. The
flowers are pink over lilac to light blue, and occurs in late autumn.
The genera name after Ancient
Greek σκίλλα; skílla which was the name for the plant way
back. The species name means 'wide leaves'.
*)Accordantly
to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae
is now part of the Asparagaceae. |
