Ascherson's description say the flowers are "purplish-red with a yellow throat", while these plants from Specks seems to be rather pale - might be something else?

This member of the Pedaliaceae family was given this name by Paul Friedrich August Ascherson in 1888. It is found in Angola, growing in a well drained soil and grit with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to eight centimetres in diameter, the annual shoots to 40 centimetres in height. The flowers are purplish-red with a yellow throat.

The genera name from Latin ptero; 'winged' and Latin discus; 'disc'. The odd species name as the first specimen was collected by an unknown sailor, on his way to Brazil.
