This member of the Bombacaceae* family was described by Jean Baptiste Christophore Fusée Aublet in 1775. It is found in Mexico and the tropical part of south America, growing along rivers. Rich soil, lots of water and some sun. It can reach for 20 meters. The white (crème/green) flowers are 20 centimetres, and the fruits the same. Can be reproduced by cuttings as well.

The genera name from the Guyanese name for one of the trees in this genera. The species name means 'lives in water'.

*)Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Bombacaceae is now part of the Malvaceae.
