This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by Friedrich Ernst Ludwig von. Fischer and Carl Anthon von. Meyer in 1840. It is found in Angola, Botswana, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Za´re. It is growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to two or even fifteen centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 100 or even 200 centimetres in height. The flowers are white to yellow with a green stripe.

The genera name from Greek: ornithos; 'bird' and gala; 'milk'. The species name  referring to the slender-leaves.

*)Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.
