This member of the Aizoaceae family was given this name by Hans-Dieter Ihlenfeldt and Sigurd Jörgensen in 1973. It is found in north western South Africa, growing in the wintertime in a well drained soil or even grit with some water and lots of sun. The swollen stems can grow to three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 20 centimetres in height. The flowers are white.

The genera name from Latin monile; 'neckless' and the species ending means 'looking like a Monilaria' as it first was described as an Mesembryanthemum.

IPNI also claims Martin Heinrich Gustav Schwantes described it in 1929.

This is a winter-grower.
