This dioecious member of the Cucurbitaceae was given this name by Célestin Alfred Cogniaux in 1881. It is found on Lesser Sunda Islands, Southern Malaysia and Java. It grows in the forests, in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. It will climb up to five meters, the caudex can grow from 15 to 30 centimetres in diameter. The flowers are green to greenish-yellow.

The genera name means 'naked stem'. The species name means 'leaves like Hedera´.
