This member of the Polygonaceae family was given this name by Kerstin Haraldson in 1978. It is found in China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Japan, growing in a well drained to rather rich soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to 30 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to four metres in height. The flowers are white.

The genera name after Gabriello Fallopia, 16th century Italian anatomist who discovered fallopian tubes. The species name means 'many flowers'.
