It is found in Botswana, Eswatini, Mozambique, eastern South Africa and eastern Zimbabwe, growing in a rather rich but still well drained soil with some to lots of water and lots of sun. It does not form a classic nice caudex, but young plants have have. The mature tree can reach five or even eight metres. The flowers are bright red.

The genera name from Greek; eryhros; 'red' for the mostly red flowers. The species name means 'very wide' for the leaves.
