This member of the Fabaceae family was given this name by Ernst Heinrich Friedrich Meyer in 1836. It is found from Cameroon to southern Ethiopia and south to South Africa, growing in a rich but well drained soil with quite some water and some sun. The caudex can grow large, the entire plant from 60 to 210 centimetres in height. The flowers are pink, magenta or bluish-purple.

The genera name means 'long' after the fruits. The species name means "with silky appressed hairs" for the pubescent leaves.
