Baijiania borneensis var. paludicola, Duyfjes. | This
dioecious member of the Cucurbitaceae family
was given this name by An Min Lu and Jian-qiang Li in 1991. It is found in
China, Malaysian island of Borneo, Taiwan and Thailand, growing in a well drained
but rich soil with quite some water and some sun sun. The caudex can grow to
40 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
to six metres in height. The flowers are from greenish white over cream to
yellow. The genera name puzzles
me: Can it be named after the Indian city of Baiji? (Or the Iraqi city with
the same name?). The species name means it originates from Borneo. |
