This member of the Passifloraceae family was
given this name by Pehr Forsskål in 1775. It is found in
Central African Republic, Chad,
Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Somalia,
Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda
and Yemen, growing in a well
drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex
can grow to 60 centimetres in diameter and two meters height. The
vines can reach eight metres. The tiny flowers are greenish white.
The name Adenia
is derived from aden, meaning gland, and pertains to the glands
found on leaves of most of the species.
The species name referring to the
veins in the leaves. |
