This member of the Montiaceae family was described by George Engelmann in 1868. It is found in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah; U.S.A. and north-western Mexico. It grows in a well drained soil with some to a lot of water and some sun. It grow up to fifteen centimetres, the flat caudex to two centimetres, the flowers are white-pink.

The genera name the American explorer Capt. Meriwether Lewis. The species name means 'short-calyx'.
