This member of the Hypoxidaceae family was given this name by the younger Carl von Linnaeus in 1781. It is found in Eswatini, Lesotho, South Africa and Zambia, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 20 centimetres in height. The flowers are bright yellow.

The genera name from the Greek hypo; 'beneath' and -oxys; 'sharp'; referring to the base of the capsule.  The species name means 'covered in soft hairs'.
