This member of the Hypoxidaceae family was given this name by William John Burchell in 1816. It is found in southern Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb will grow to six centimetres and the leaves to 70 centimetres. The flowers are bright yellow.

Also seen as a member of the Anthericaceae and Liliaceae families.

The genera name from the Greek hypo; 'beneath' and -oxys; 'sharp'; referring to the base of the capsule. The species name means 'chubby'.
