This member of the
was given this name by Matthew H.P. Jebb and Camilla Rose Huxley in
2019. It is found on Mount Bwebwesu and Rossel Island; Papua New
Guinea, growing as an epiphyte on rocks with quite some water and some to lots of
sun. The caudex can grow to fifteen centimetres in diameter, the entire
plant to 60 centimetres in height. The flowers are white while the
fruits are red.
genera name after Greek hydnon meaning 'tuber' and phyton
meaning 'plant', after the swollen branches. The species is named
the d’Entrecasteaux islands from where the species was first recognised.
