This dioecious member of
the Cucurbitaceae was given this name by Martinez Crovetto
in 1947. It is found in northern Argentina, growing in salty soils with some
water and lots of sun. The swollen roots will grow to two
centimetres in diameter, the vines up to 150 centimetres long. The flowers are small and greenish,
while the fruits are orange-red when ripe. Name from the Greek
halos 'salt, sea' and sikyos wild cucumber. The
species name after Arturo E. Ragonese, an Argentinean botanist.
