This member of the
Commelinaceae
family
was given this name by Carl Georg Theodor Kotschy and Johann Joseph Peyritsch in
1867. It is found in central Africa, growing in a well drained soil with
some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 1,3 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
to 30 centimetres in height. The flowers are blue or lilac, purple or even white.
The genera name from Latin;
cyaneus; 'blue'. The species name means 'growing in tufts'. |
