Amanuel G. Ghebretinsae and Mats Ingmar Thulin in 2007. It is found in Angola, Kenya, Madagascar,
Namibia, northern South Africa and Tanzania, growing in a well drained soil with
some water and lots of sun. The caudex might grow to five centimetres in diameter, the
vines to 50 centimetres in lentth. The flowers are yellow.
The genera name from
Latin; cucumis; 'cuecumber'. The species is named is Latin for "ashen-grey"
for the hairs.
