This member of the Periplocaceae* family was given this name by Hendrik Johannes Tjaar Venter and Andor M. Venter in 2013. It is found in northern South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and little to some sun. The caudex can grow to ten centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to six metres in height. The flowers are creamy to pale green.

The genera name is an n anagram of Pentopetia, into which Petopentia natalensis was originally and erroneously placed. The species name after the edges of the leaves.

This Genus has recently been under Asclepiadaceae, then classified under Periploceceae.

*)Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Periplocaceae is now part of the Apocynaceae.
