This member of the Rubiaceae family was given this name by Elmer Drew Merrill and Lily May Perry  in 1945. It is found in the highlands of Irian Jaya in Indonesia, growing mainly as an epiphyte with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 30 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 200 centimetres in height. The flowers are white.

The genera name means 'ant head'. The species name in honour of the collector; Leonard John Brass.
