This member of the Capparaceae family was given this name by Gordon Parker DeWolf, Jr. in 1962. It is found in Eritrea, southern Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zaïre, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to twelve centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from one to two metres in height. The flowers are yellowish white.

The genera name from the the plant's Arabic name: Meru. The species from Latin; sub-; under, and Latin; cordata; 'heart-shaped', as of leaves almost being heart-shaped.
