This member of the Moraceae family was described by Friedrich Martin Josef Welwitsch in 1869. It is found in Angola, Cameroon, Tanzania, Congo and Uganda, growing in well drained peat with some to lots of water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow up to eight centimetres, the stem 60 centimetres height. The flowers are green.

The genera is named after Theodor Dorsten, 16th century German botanist and medical professor at Marburg. The species name means 'naked, 'living', stay hidden.
