Georg August Schweinfurth,
A member of the Moraceae
from Socotra, described by Georg August Schweinfurth 1883. It grows on the rocky slopes, and
it does not need a lot of water but lots of sun. As the picture shows, the
flowers are green. It is possible to root cuttings. The stem can grow up to
60 cm in diameter and get
one and a half meter high - or higher.
The plant is hypanthodios: A
plant which is monoecious but still requires two different clones to get fertilized!
Kind of a problem when all plants in cultivation seems to originate
from the same clone!
Keep warm and moist at winter, as the winters on Socotra.
The genera is named after Theodor
Dorsten, 16th century German botanist and medical professor at Marburg.
The species name means 'giant'.
