This member of the Vitaceae family was given this name by Bernard M. Descoings in 1964. It is found in the central western Madagascar, growing in a well drained soil in open forests. The twining stem can reach six metres and 40 to 100 centimetres in diameter. The flowers are greenish to crème coloured.

The genera name from the Greek kyphos; 'tumor' or ,'hump' and stemma; 'garland' or 'crown'. The species name as it is found in the Sakaraha Forest.
