This dioecious member of the Cycadaceae family was given this name by Ferdinand Jacob Heinrich von Mueller in 1876. It is found in south-western Papau New Guinea and eastern Indonesian. Some add Queensland in northern Australia. It is growing in a well drained but rich soil with quite some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 25 centimetres in diameter, two metres high, the entire plant to three metres in height. The cones are brownish.

The genera name from Greek kyklos: 'circle' referring to the rounded tubers.  The species name for the country it was first found in; Papau.
