This
monoecious member of the Sterculiaceae* family
was given this name by Robert Brown in 1844. It is found in Victoria, New South Wales
and Queensland in eastern Australia, growing in pretty much any soil with
some water and lots of sun. The trunk can grow from 50 to 100 centimetres in diameter, the entire
tree from ten to 18 metres in height. The flowers are cream-colured over pink to red.
The genera name from Greek, brachys, short and chiton, a
tunic, a reference to the coating on the seed.
The species name from the Latin 'poplar-like'; the leaves resemble those
of Populus species.
*)Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Sterculiaceae is now part of the Malvaceae. |
